eWallet

Are you looking for a secure place to store credit cad numbers, passwords...etc?

Well, now you can further extend that idea of replacing your wallet with your PocketPC - less to carry in the long run. There is a great wee program that comes FREE on the disks that came with your iPaq called eWallet.

It's on the Compaq CDROM (either red or white, not the silver Microsoft CD). You'll find it in the X:\Compaq\eWallet folder (where X= the drive letter for your CDROM drive). To install it, simply connect and synchronise your iPaq in the usual way and then double click on eWaletPT.exe then follow the prompts.

This small utility is a special secure database, designed to hold your confidential data. All the information is fully encrypted - not at all accessible without the password. What's even better is that it is smart enough to close itself, locking others out, if you leave it open. It simply times out & closes itself. So even if you leave the file open & showing all your secret stuff (we docs are notoriously 'careful' with that kind of stuff') and then somebody steals it, eWallet will have shut itself down, protecting all your data.

I find it invaluable for storing the myriad passwords that I have accumulated over the past few years. Also I can never remember or find my Social Insurance Number - I need it rarely enough that I don't usually have it handy, but often enough that I really should have it with me all the time. For these situations, eWallet has proved itself time & time again!

It is pretty easy to use & install - I don't think I need to provide extra information here -- but feel free to email me if you need help. If there are certain problems that commonly crop up, we can always extend this FAQ.

Remember not to use obvious passwords -- 'sex', 'god' and 'password' remain the top three in popularity -- but no cracker would ever think of trying those, eh? Also avoid birthdates, family names or words that are too short. It's preferable to make up a nonsence word of at least 6 chars and to include digits and punctuation. Eg zvju'6k is hard to crack (unfortunately also hard to remember).
