How do I Backup & Restore my data?

You will lose your data! Just like hard disk crashes, you should be prepared for WHEN (not if) the day you lose all your data.

What do I need?

  1. A desktop or laptop computer
  2. Software for synchronising
  3. Cable connection between the two.

In other words, you already have all you need.

Where can I find an item I have lost?

If you are having trouble finding something that you previously entered into your device, e.g. a Contact, a Task, a Note or Memo, use the Find utility to help you. This is pretty obvious advice but many users seem to overlook its presence. Find is very fast - much quicker than looking by hand. Simple give it a word that you know is contained in the item. It is not case-sensitive.

On the Palm, simply click on the Magnifying glass in the bottom right.

On the PocketPC, simply click on Start | Find ...

My screen taps don't seem to work right?

Sometimes, it seems that your device will act oddly, not reacting the way that you expect. Letters on the keyboard or icons that you have pressed seem to misbehave. This is because the touch screen (called a digitizer) has developed a mild dysfunction and needs to be realigned. This is a simple process:

On the PocketPC, click on Start | Settings | Align Screen and then follow the instructions.

On the Visor, click on Home | Prefs. Select Digitizer from the drop down list in the top right corner. Follow the instructions.

How do I find my way around LexiDrugs?

What happened to all my data?

All my data and appointments etc seem to have vanished. Only my Contacts remain. And what happened to LexiDrugs and that stuff?

Oh dear! Almost certainly your battery ran down...or you did a hard reset on your device. Your device will still work once reset or recharged - most of the main programs are built directly into the ROM of the device and cannot be erased or lost. But all your own data, plus the programs from PocketProf that we installed are lost. Fortunately, you can recover these by doing a Restore from your Backup...you did do a Backup didn't you? If not, you will need to contact us about reinstalling your data, take a look at these notes about how to fix this.

Interestingly, the Contacts information can be stored in your ROM so they may survive a hard reset.

How do I use all those wonderful Palm medical tools?

Many of my colleagues use Palms and Visors. How do I use some of the great tools that they have access to?

While Palm applications will not run directly on the PocketPC platform, there are now a number of tools that will let you do most of what you want. Click here for more information on how to make use of these great resources.

A recent search of Palm medical applications showed very few where there is not a direct PocketPC equivalent or more than adequate alternative. Happily, this makes the choice of hardware platform much easier because you can access the important tools that you need on the device that you choose.

What the heck does PDA stand for?

Yet another TLA! (Three Letter Acronym). Some would say it means Pretty Damned Awkward...officially it means Personal Digital Assistant.

What is the best way to input data into my PDA?

The best way is to enter it into your desktop machine and then transfer it over to the device during synchronisation. See above for info on copying files etc. If you have to input stuff directly into the device, you can now do with a small folding keyboard from Targus called the Stowaway. Brilliant piece of engineering.

If you just have to tap it in, take a look at our notes on data input. This may help you speed things up a bit.

How do I change my cluttered Start Menu?

The Palm is appealing in its simplicity, whereas Windows CE has been criticised for making complex the usually simple things like menu structures. Well you can make your menu structure as plain or as complex as you want. Read these tips on how to alter the various menus on your PocketPC.

How can I improve the quality of my sound recordings?

If you're a bit disappointed at the scratchy quality of your voice recordings, take a look at this file which gives you some examples and tips on how to improve things. It is a compressed zip file, containing a Word document - note that it is almost 3MB in size - on a slow connection, that will take a little while. You also need a sound card and MS Word on your desktop to listen to the recordings.

Where is the instruction book?

You may have noticed that there is no paper instruction book for the iPaq. Many users have not found the need for one, which is an encouraging sign of the unit's usability. However, there is a full instruction manual available on the Compaq CD that comes with the device (the disk is either red or white, not silver). It comes in various formats - the easiest to use is the one in Adobe Acrobat PDF format - you will need the Acrobat reader but this is easily found, if you don't already have it.

Here is the older version from the red Compaq CD - this one is only 934kb in size. (The newer version is over 3MB - prettier but a big download.) You can print out this manual if you want but it is over a hundred pages long!

There is also a set of useful guides on ZDnet, and if you prefer something more interactive, Compaq has a lively interactive demo of the iPaq here.

I can't find LexiDrugs/Griffiths on my device...

There has been a change of readers for the suite of products that we get from LexiComp. Use the LexiComp Reader to access both LexiDrugs and Griffiths' 5 Minute Clinical Consult. Both books share the same front-end reader. This is different from the older product line from Skyscape. Click here for more information on using the LexiComp reader.
