ListProFrom Ilium Software, this is a great little list creating utility that comes free with your iPaq. This is on the red (or white) Compaq CDROM that comes with your Compaq iPaq 3650 -- you will find it in the X:\Compaq\LstPro folder. There are also many pre-made lists for ListPro available on the IliumSoft web site on the ListPro List Exchange. You may notice on Ilium's web site that they have produced a new version of ListPro - their latest is version 3.0 - the version that is provided by Compaq is v2.0. I have looked at the newer version - apart from some small improvements and cosmetic changes, I think that for most of us version 2 is just fine. There is a free trial of v3.0 so if you want to give it a whirl, go ahead - however, be aware that the list file format is slightly different for v2 and v3. ListPro will offer to upgrade any list up to v3 if needed. If you need to go back to v2 file format, which is what most of have, you have to grab a small free utility from Ilium which converts v3 files back to v2 format. The large list of files on Ilium's List Exchange are all in v3 format, which is a bit of a nuisance. It is quite straightforward to convert them back to v2 format with their tool. I have grabbed some of the more interesting lists and converted them to v2 format for you. I have also added some small lists of my own. How to Use ListProUsing ListPro is pretty easy and intuitive. There are a couple of things that are not immediately obvious. Firstly, when you create a ListPro file, there are two steps before you can start entering stuff into your list. First, create and name the file.
(Sorry about the streaks in these images - bug in my screen capture tool)
You now have your list title but you must still create a List before you can start inserting Items into the list. Click on New then give your List a name...
The default Columns will work for most situations. However, if you want to make use of Flags, as well as Check boxes, for your items, you can do it now by clicking on the Columns tab... If you want to use Flags, check the box beside that entry. The other field that is commonly useful is the Notes field - this allows for longer entries, which can scroll on the page. Click Ok when you have selected your fields.
Now you can enter stuff into your actual list. In some ways, this extra step seems to be a bother but I suppose it allows you to group several lists within one file. Click on your actual list to start entering items. Click on New (again) to enter your first item...
Enter a name for your item. You can other stuff like Category, Priority, Notes etc. If this is the only thing to add, click on Ok in the top right. Otherwise click on the Add button in bottom right - this adds the item and clears the fields for new info in one step. You can continue adding items in this way until you are done or the cows come home (well, we are just finished the Olympics!). The Indent field in the above screen needs a wee bit of explaining. You can create hierarchical lists, kinda like an outline mode with collapsible groups, indentation etc, with this field. The default top level items are at Indent 0. As you increase the indent level, either by typing in the Indent number or using the horizontal arrows, the current item is indented further in lower sub-groups.
When you return to List mode, it looks like this...
You can collapse groups by clicking on the minus box, just as with outliners and file trees in Windows. Flags and Check BoxesOne last thing worth explaining - ListPro is more than just a hierarchical note taker. You can create reusable lists - the most obvious example is your weekly shopping list: create a list that has all the things that you might buy, or at least need to be reminded of. When you are in the larder, flag those items that you need this week by clicking on the wee flag. When you have tossed the item into your shopping cart, you can check it off with the Check Box. So what's the big deal about that - sounds like pencil & paper would do the same more easily...under View, you can ask ListPro to Show Only Flagged Items and Don't Show Checked Items.
This means that for this week's shopping list, it won't show you items from the generic list that are not needed this week (not flagged), and as you buy stuff and check it off, it disappears from the list display. For short lists, not much of an advantage but for complex lists, it helps ++. There are many more capabilities to this program but gives you a taste of why it is worth checking out. Take a look at some of the example lists for more of an idea of how to use ListPro. |
