Removing Software

If your PocketPC has become overloaded with stuff, you may want to remove some programs or data that are no longer useful. In trimming some of the 'fat' from memory, there are several things that you might want to excise.

First, to take a look and see whether you might be running out of space on your PocketPC, check your memory available.

Old data

If you have been using your PocketPC for extensive note taking etc, you may have some older files that no longer need to be on your device. It might be worth getting a memory card for extra storage space but in the meantime, you can click here for help on how to move such files off your device and onto your desktop.

Remember that if you have Files synchronization turned on in ActiveSync, you will need to move these files into a different folder on your desktop - not the default shared files folder that ActiveSync sets up.

Old programs

Removing old programs is quite easy and can be done from the PocketPC itself or from the desktop using ActiveSync. First, be sure that you want to do this - it is easy to reinstall most programs but you must have the installation/setup program available, and some programs may need to be unlocked. Generally, we do not encourage users to remove the medical programs that we pre-installed on the device because it can be quite difficult to register them again.

If you are in any doubt about this, then contact us first. Also, it is a good idea to perform a full Backup of your PocketPC before removing programs, in case you run into problems.

Using the device

  1. Tap on Start | Settings
  2. Tap on the System tab near the bottom of the page
  3. Tap on the Remove Programs icon at the bottom of the page
  4. You will see a list of installed programs.

Select the program from the list and then tap the Remove button.

Occasionally, you may need to do a soft reset to fully remove the program.

Using ActiveSync

You can also add and remove software using ActiveSync:

  1. Connect your PocketPC to your desktop in the usual fashion.
  2. In the ActiveSync window on your desktop, click on Tools | Add/Remove Programs...
  3. If there are a lot of programs on your device, it may take a minute or two while ActiveSync scours this list. Then another window will popup with the list of programs currently installed on your device.
  4. To remove the program, simply uncheck or clear the tick box beside the program and then click Ok. The program will be removed from the device automatically.

Do not use the Remove button in this window, unless you really do want to remove all vestiges of the program and its installation and setup files that are on your desktop. It is unusual to have to do this. Consult with us first before doing this.

You may find that some programs' tick boxes are grayed out. This means that ActiveSync does not know how to remove this program. Consult with us if you have problems with this.

Clutter

There are a few programs that leave a lot of clutter behind them and can clog up your memory. The commonest cause of this is web browsing, either online or offline with AvantGo. Consult the AvantGo web site for info on how to remove these unwanted cache files.

To clear old files from your web browser:

  1. Tap on Start | Internet Explorer
  2. Tap on Tools | Options...
  3. Tap on the Delete Files button to get rid of the old cached files.
  4. Tap on Ok.
