Why is my PocketPC slowing down?If you are finding that your PocketPC is becoming Parkinsonian, it may be time for a soft reset. Before you do this make sure that you no work in progress that is unsaved. Then simply insert your stylus into the small hole in the bottom right of your device.
Why do I need to do this?WindowsCE is supposed to provide seamless memory management. This is handled much better now than it was in previous versions of WindowsCE but it still gets bogged down from time to time. Clearing dormant programs out of the working RAM space improves memory allocation and speed. What do you mean by 'unsaved work in progress'?Entries that you have not completed by clicking on the Ok button - for example, part way through entering a Contact address; an open Word file; an unfinished email message that you were composing -- oops, not that last one - it is important to click on the Send button for that because Ok loses the message - kinda stupid, huh? Changes that were made since the last time that item was saved will be lost, if you don't save them before doing a reset. If it is a new item, it will be lost altogether. Make sure that all such items are closed and completed. What programs are most affected by this slowdown?Large databases and reference works seem to be most affected by this...but eventually all may be affected. This is most noticeable when switching programs or launching new ones. Are there any downsides to doing this reset? Not really. It can be a wee bit inconvenient to go back & check that all items were closed properly. You can use the QUtilities button (button 3) to bring up a current list of running programs and then move to them if you want to check if their items are saved properly.
Does it help to have stuff saved on the Storage Card?It helps if you get into the habit of saving stuff on your Storage Card, rather than in Main Memory. This gives WindowsCE more working space in RAM - this keeps it happier. |
