Using Palm Tools on your PocketPC

Many of my colleagues use Palms and Visors. How do I use some of the great tools that they have access to?

Palm Pilots and their offspring have been around the medical world for 6-7 years. Consequently there are many more small tools, documents and databases that have been assembled by interested docs and med students. You may have seen Palm users beaming these to each other - and up till now, you've had to stare sadly in the window, unable to use these tools, even when you can beam them from a Palm user.

Bill Boone from MedicalPocketPC has put together a great article that explains this a little better. (Also see page on other options.)

Since his article, DDH Software has released HanDBase for the PocketPC. This will allow you to directly read HanDBase files. See the Library for more information on this. There are hundreds of medical databases available in this format. Although they were originally designed for the Palm, they will work just fine on the PocketPC. If there is interest, we can set up a mechanism for participants in the PocketProf project to share HanDBase databases that they have created.

There are several tools that will allow you to read the Palm DOC format on your PocketPC. Note that the Palm DOC format is not the same as the Microsoft Word doc format - they share nothing in common except the name.

bulletStarbuck
bulletPeekABook
bulletPalmReader (ironically, the best of these?)

There are now an increasing number of tools that allow your PocketPC to access information that has been written for the Palm platform.

bulletiSilo -- HTML style reader and reference tool
bulletAvantGo -- offline news channel
bulletCogniQ -- offline reference
New information and Programs

There are now some more interesting ways in which you can run Palm apps on your PocketPC. See this page for more information on this rapidly changing area of the PDA world.

We would be interested in hearing from anyone who has tried these applications and of any comparisons. Or if you have found any other resources that you think we should know about, please let us know.
